Rep. Akin

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare…. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Yes, Representative Todd Akin (R-MO) really said that in a televised interview which aired Sunday.  Representative Akin is challenging Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill in the November election, until Sunday a seat the Republican Party thought it could pick up in its attempt to reclaim a majority of U.S. Senate seats.

Until Sunday.  Both Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have distanced themselves from this absurd remark, and Akin is now claiming to have “misspoken.”

Questions about pregnancy resulting from “legitimate” rape, however, are not new.  Prevalent 18th Century thought held that conception would only occur when the female was “aroused.”  Arousal would only occur when the woman “wanted it, yet another wrench to be thrown at attempts to prosecute assailants.  By the mid 19th Century this myth had been debunked, but might it not be creeping back from under that rock?

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, the National GOP does to try to remove Congressman Akin from the ballot (and time is of the essence in order to do that).   But in the meantime, it serves, yet again, as proof that the “gender gap” that will play a large role in the Missouri election, could very well be a determining factor in the national election too.

Your thoughts?
