In class last week, we learned that Amelia Bloomer attempted to make bloomers a popular dress for women. Bloomer wanted to transform the unrealistic corsets and dresses into an outfit that can function easier. There is a similar fight still brewing. The article about how young Iraqis women are drifting away from traditional attire to a more modern look has Iraqis flustered. Check out the article to see even though American women are comfortable in their attire Iraqi women are still fighting the battle.

How do you feel about this article? How could such “restricted” dress in Iraq be beneficial to women? Also, what purpose do you think the corset served in the Victorian era? Are there any correlations to dress and the restricting of mobility and women’s participation in the public sphere?
