Closing the Divide

17 Sep

I am sure you have seen Ellen DeGeneres somewhere.
Her comedic voice may sound familiar since she played the animated character Dory. Maybe you have seen her in humorous J. C. Penney’s advertisements on the television. How about on the front page of magazines as Cover Girl or as the host on her own daytime television show? No matter what type of media, movies, television or magazines Ellen DeGeneres has made her début and she is here to stay. Ellen DeGeneres is a valued role model in the gay community and women inspire to mock her work ethic.

America has been slow to transition to accepting the homosexual community; however as some states rewrite marriage laws to legalize gay marriage it still seemed there was more gay men who were public figures rather than lesbians. Now, Ellen DeGeneres has become a prominent gay woman in the media and has gathered a following to begin the reception of lesbians. DeGeneres breaks the stereotypes to represent the LGBT community with a soft and humorous side. DeGeneres educates the public to be more accepting of others using her daytime talk show to stream content with a more liberal viewpoint. She also performs interviews with lesbian guests, which isn’t as common in the past decades. Ellen has become a voice for both minorities: women and the gay community.

True Beauty?

17 Sep

I am sure most of you have seen this video but I still can’t believe this is how women should be perceived as “beautiful.” Women look at these advertisements everyday and strive to mirror the images they see. How can they look like these fake models when the women are covered in make-up, air brushed, Photoshopped to perfection. Maybe if we didn’t have a distorted idea of what beauty truly is, we wouldn’t have to distort photographs.

Baring All

The newest scandal is photos of Kate Middleton topless which have been leaked to the world. An Italy magazine posted the photographs for the sole purpose to provide content for their gossip publication. I feel sorry for Middleton who was sunbathing privately in a secluded house. I understand that the duchess is royalty and placed under a microscope but as a woman I think it is unacceptable to expose her body to the world. Where is the privacy?
