Katie Couric and Tyra Banks

In the movie Miss Representation, Katie Couric gives advice and tells her story on being the first female solo news anchor of a weekday nightly newscast on one of the top three stations. Her work there was award-winning, but she continued to trail behind ABC and NBC. When her contract expired, it was not renewed, and she left the station.

She now hosts Katie, a talk show on ABC. Personally, I’m disappointed with her move from nightly news anchor/journalist to talk show host. She has guests like E.L James, the author of the Fifty Shades trilogy and other non-consequential celebrities, unlike her interviews for CBS where she interviewed people like President Obama, Condoleezza Rice, and Hillary Clinton.

Did she sell out?

She recently had Tyra Banks on her show to talk about “the culture of cruelty.” This upsets me because I think Tyra Banks prolongates the culture of cruelty with America’s Next Top Model. While her show is fun to watch, it impacts the teenagers who watch it and see Banks telling a girl who is 5’6″ and 130 pounds that she is too short and overweight. Banks’ unrealistic perception of what short and overweight is hurts the girls who watch the show who are average size.
